Louisiana - Florida - 2018

Friday, April 27, 2018.

Dave and Aida Escobar accompanied me on this trip to New Orleans and Florida. I dropped Tina off at the kennel early in the morning. We left a little after 10:00 and arrived in Boutte around 7:30 in the evening. Unloaded our luggage, found our rooms and had a bit to eat. Then hit the sack.

Saturday, April 28, 2018.

So today was the reason for our trip. Joe and Barbara Hattala's 50th anniversary was being celebrated at Chris' house in reserve.

I dropped Dave and Aida off at the Treasure Chest Casino on Williams Blvd then proceeded to Chris' place. I didn't see the turn from highway 61, but was able to find his street from river road.

He has a huge home that he built mostly by himself. Robby came to Remy's last days. The others I hadn't seen in years. I recognized Pam right away, but Aimee looked much more mature than the child I remember.

Chris has a garage with lift to work on cars, etc. He has a couple of big cycles. The pool he designed is a bit unique with the circulating water returning in a water falls.

They had plenty of finger sandwiches and desserts to eat. It was a pleasant afternoon.

Joe and Barb's 50th Anniversary - April 28, 2018

Sunday, April 29.

We planned to attend the 10:00 Mass in Ama, but when we got there found out they started at 9:30, so we headed to St. Anthony church in Luling for their 10:30 Mass. Saw Joe Hattala again as an usher and Father Anthony Odiong said the Mass. The Mass went a little long due to several First Communions.

From there we headed to City Park and took the shuttle to the Fair Grounds for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest. The first order of business was finding lunch. It took us a while to get our bearings. Finally we figured out where the food booths were, I snatched a muffeleta. It was good. I don't think I've had one since we left New Orleans area in 1987.

The event wasn't as exciting as I remembered it. It was too crowded, and most of the attendents were more concerned with socializing than the music. This was especially a problem for Jon Batiste with The Dap-Kings performance, since his band was more of a quiet type jazz style that needed more attention than the crowd allowed.

Dave and Aida weren't impressed with the shrimp po-boy they shared. I thought there was a good selection of foods to buy. They aren't seafood fans I guess so we went to Copelands for dinner. It was good, so overall it was a good day, if not what I expected.

The Jazz Festival - April 29th

Monday, April 30 th 2018.

So with nothing special planned for this day we slept late and made an early casino run to the Boomtown Casino. It was an opportunity for Lucy and Edward to get out of the house. The cards weren't in my favor again, but we just made it on time to the buffe, 15 minutes from closing. So we had to get our plates filled up before they started taking the food away. I ate too much. Again!

Tuesday, May 1 st 2018.

We ate some breakfast then started driving to Orlando. Got there around 8:30 in the evening. Forgot about losing an hour going that direction. Also had trouble getting off the turnpike. You needed a SunPass to use most of the exits.

Wednesday, May 2 nd 2018.

Returned to the office in the morning to get information on things to do in the area. Decided on the magic/comedy show that evening. After we booked the tickets we went to the Grill at the Grand Vista Golf Club near our room. The food wasn't especially good and the waitress had an attitude.

Not sure what Dave and Aida did after breakfast, but I tried the Nature Trail next to the golf course. It wasn't all that impressive. Basically if follwed the edge of the golf course with not so impressive views.

Later I visited the pool for a few hours. Dave and Aida apparently went there later and had some drinks. They say they saw me there, but I was at a different section of the pool than they claimed.

Marriott Nature Walk - May 2nd

That evening we went to the dinner show at the Wonderworks building. We saw the Outa Control Magic Comedy Show. The Wonderworks Building looks like an upside down house. The dinner was Pepperoni or Plain Cheese pizza. It was pretty good food and the show was excellent.

Wonderworks - May 2nd

Thursday, May 3 rd 2018.

So today I was required to participate in a sales presentation which was scheduled at 12:30. Since we weren't impressed with Mariott's breakfast offering, we researched and decided to go to Keke's. I knew what I wanted before we got there. We had a few minutes wait, but not long. I had to go back to the car to get a sweater because it was cold in there.

After breakfast I dropped Dave and Aida at the theatre, then made my way to the Marriott review. After the meeting I made my way back to the Marriott Grande Vista and went to the pool again for a little while. I also researched a place to eat dinner at.

I decided on the Bahama Breeze Island Grille which was close to the theatre. I chose it for the Seafood Paella on the menu. It was pretty good.

Marriott - May 3rd

Friday, May 4 th 2018.

After checking out, we headed towards Jupitor to visit my sister Christine. There was going to be a lot of turns after we exited the turnpike so we used the GPS to find the address. She worked this time. We ate a late breakfast on the turnpike and somehow I left my phone on the table. Had to pick it up on the return trip.

Don't remember when I last saw Chris and Gary. They have a nice house and Christine gave Aida and me a tour of the neighborhood. David and Gary stayed behind and bonded. When we got back we ate the lasagna Christine made. It was almost as good as what I make.

Later we learned how to play Cuban Dominoes. Apparently this game is the rave in their sub division. It's an easy enough game to play.

Miller's House - May 4th

Saturday, May 5 th 2018.

Gary made us breakfast that morning, then we started the long trip back to New Orleans. It rained early in the morning and we had a rainbow to see us off.

David drove a couple of hours so it wasn't that hard of a trip. Lucy called just as we were about to eat in Mobile. They had supper made, so we just gassed up and headed to Boutte.

Sunday, May 6 th 2018.

Got up early and went to the 9:00 Mass at Holy Family Church. They had a guest priest and things weren't well organized. After Mass I went to Hebert's to pick up the 25# of cooked crawfish I had ordered the day before. It just fit in the ice chest I brought.

I packed the frog legs and fish that they were giving me into a garbage bad and packed ice around the outside of the bags. I thought it would make the trip still frozen and most of it did. It looks like I didn't get some ice on the bottom. I had to cook some of the fish the next day.

They had I-10 closed right before the I-8 connection, so we had to get off and find the toll road from the side roads. In addition, the construction on the I-59 south of Houston had the traffic stop and go. The trip took a couple hours longer than expected due to the delays, but eventually we got home.
